Drug companies seek to overturn rule prohibiting marketing for off-label uses
Several sources reported yesterday that the major drug manufacturers have initiated a campaign to overturn the FDA Rule that prohibits them from actively marketing drugs for uses that have not been researched and approved. As the law currently stands, drugs are approved by the FDA for particular uses, and while a physician may utlize a drug for a purpose not previously approved, the manufacturer cannot actively market and promote these "off-label" uses. Now, Big Pharma is using its money and influence in Washington to eliminate this safety rule. Not hard to guess who will win this round, given the current influence of money in politics.
