The Peanut Corporation and salmonella: the latest chapter in a sad saga
Turns out that the unlicensed, uninspected and unsanitary Texas plant owned by the company not only produced Salmonella-tainted peanut products, those products have now been linked to the nationwide Salmonella outbreak that has contributed to nine deaths and more than 600 serious illnesses. The Company has now declared bankruptcy and the owner has refused to testify before Congress. A third plant in Virginia is now getting a closer look: state investigators had reported numerous health violations in prior inspections, including evidence of rodents and mold. The contamination from the Texas plant was identified in Vitamin Cottage peanut butter.
